The world is just a happier place with chocolate and clearly, it’s something that many of us would gladly eat. Around this time (Easter) of year many of us over indulge on chocolate, unfortunately, it’s not as healthy as we wish it could be as some forms of chocolate have heaps of saturated fat (the bad fats) and sugar- but before you all go into a OMG, DOES THAT MEAN I CAN’T HAVE MY CHOCO EASTER BUNNY ANYMORE frenzy, some forms of chocolate are healthier for you and can have many health benefits…
The Kind of Chocolate that will make your Easter Bunny Happier…
When it comes to chocolate, the darker the better- so it’s best to avoid lighter chocolate such as white chocolate. This is because the darker the chocolate, the more cacao or cocoa the chocolate has (and the cocoa/cacao is what makes chocolate good for you!).
Dark chocolate is the healthiest kind out there as it’s loaded with antioxidants called flavenoids which help fight disease, protect you from heart disease (as it can improve in your blood flow), can help reduce inflammation and is abundant in nutrients such as iron, copper and potassium. To get the most health benefits out of chocolate, opt for chocolate, which has cacao in it instead of cocoa (and cocoa is typically found in many commercial and processed chocolate brands).
So…what’s the difference between cacao and cocoa- aren’t they the same thing?
Cacao are beans which come from the Cacao Tree. It is unprocessed and uncooked – so it’s chocolate in it’s earliest form. When these beans are processed, cleaned and roasted, it becomes cocoa.
Because cacao has not been processed, it has more antioxidants than cocoa and is more nutritious being higher in fatty acids, iron, copper, zinc, sulphur and calcium than cocoa.
So um… how do I eat chocolate everyday and still look amazing?
Opt for dark chocolate that’s made of at least 60% cocoa or cacao and it’s recommended that you should have no more than have 6 grams per day. By doing this, you’ll get all the health benefits from chocolate such as being less likely to get cardiovascular disease, lower blood pressure and stroke and can even lead to weight loss (as the cacao has chromium which controls blood sugar and coumarin which can help supress your appetite). This goes to show that you don’t need to take chocolate out of your diet to become ‘healthier’- you just need to find the right kind of chocolate and your body will love you for it!
