One thing is for sure, fad diets are not just a pain to fit into a daily routine, which leave us hungry and craving all the bad things that make us sluggish, they are actually dangerous to our bodies and brains. So finding a way of eating that keeps you satisfied, gives you energy, creates all-round health, and tastes delicious, is really a huge treat. That’s what eating the paleo way does. Paleo, when relating to food, means eating organic, non-agricultural, unprocessed produce, whenever you feel hungry. Yep, that’s right: no restrictions that make you feel faint while you wait for your next low fat processed cheese and cracker – none of that. In fact, no low fat anything.
Low fat foods contain gums, sugars, and starches to replace the fats that have been removed. So they are less healthy anyway, even before you consider the fact that our bodies need healthy fats to function optimally. Our bodies use fat for a wide variety of functions, and since we can’t make it ourselves, we need to get it from the foods we eat. There are dangerous fats, such as many heated oils, so, as with all the other foods we eat, the closer the fat is to it’s natural state, the healthier it is for us.
We use fats to:
keep us insulated
help proteins to do their jobs efficiently
help control growth
support our immune function
play a part in reproduction and metabolism.
Sadly, fats have got a bad rap over the last half century. However, their lack in our diet has contributed obesity, rather than curing it.
The paleo way means eating meat, poultry and eggs, leafy greens, seasonal vegetables and fruits, oils, nuts, seeds, and tubers. If you are not intolerant to dairy, then cheeses and milk are also a great source of nutrition. One of the great effects of eating the paleo way, is that the kinds of foods you eat, leave you feeling full. Also, once you’ve been eating this way for a few weeks, you’ll notice you no longer have cravings for carbs, or sugar. And, of course, you’ll feel health and happy, which has so many fantastic benefits. The only real way to know if this way of eating works for you, is to try it!
