One of my fave fruits that I can have all year round are berries. A heckload of berries. Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries- there are so many! They’re those red and blue circular blobs we place on desserts as toppings to make unhealthy desserts look somewhat healthier (and back in my non-vegan days, I used to order them with pancakes- together with dairy full-fat ice cream and choco sauce, but hey, the berries made it healthy, right?). They’re placed ON custard tarts NOT IN (cos that would be socially unacceptable) and they’re a crucial part in an aussie pav. Of course, we hear everywhere that they’re so good for you – but when you take away the pav, pancakes and custard tart, why should we eat them?
Reasons why we should love our berries as much as Aussie’s love their pav
Your brain will love you for it – eating blueberries contain an antioxidant called anthocyanins which make you more mentally alert, giving you better memory and learning skills. Antioxidants also help protect cells from being damaged by free radicals (which are harmful to our bodies as they can cause our cells to die- so the antioxidants are pretty much superheroes, fighting off these evil villans called free radicals).
Have glowing skin and hair- thanks to vitamin C found in berries which makes this happen, you can roam the streets feeling like a garnier model and your hair flick would be on point.
Can assist with weight loss – they keep you full for longer as they’re high in fiber and because they’re made of mainly water, they make you full quickly. In other words, they’ll keep you full without feeling the need to chow down a hefty load of food.
Avoid cancer and other chronic diseases – thanks to the antioxidants found in berries, you’re less likely to get many diseases such as cardiovascular disease. The fiber also assists in lowering our cholesterol levels and blood pressure and the folate in berries can help prevent depression and lift your mood.
And if that doesn’t make you want to have a bowl of berries like, RIGHT NOW, each kind of berry has it’s own unique mix of superfood properties…
Blackberries– has ‘polyphenols’ which assists in the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Also has heaps of fiber and get this – they’re jam-packed with vitamin C, iron, vitamin A and calcium!
Strawberries– are said to be perfect for weight loss as they are 90% water and contain heaps of fiber. Eat these if you want healthier hair, as they are high in folate (which is a type of vitamin B).
Blueberries – can help decrease your chances of having a heart attack, can improve your memory as it’s high in antioxidants and even help with blood flow as they’re said to widen our arteries
Cranberries – increase the amount of good cholesterol in the body and help with infections in the urinary tract. They’re also high in fiber.
Incaberries – contain fibre necessary for controlling appetite and reducing cholesterol. They have a range of nutrients such as vitamin C, potassium and phosphorus and are naturally low in sodium.
